Victorville man gets 70 stitches after pit bull attack

A 64-year-old Victorville man is left with 70 stitches on his face after he was attacked by three pit bulls on Friday.

“I walked into the emergency (room) trying to like hold my face up,” Ruben Varela said.

Varela said he was loading metal into his pickup truck in the 15700 block of Cottonwood Street when pit bulls that he had seen in the backyard of a nearby home attacked him. They bit him on his face, legs and buttocks.

“I warned the neighbor they were vicious,” Varela said. “Those pit bulls were so vicious and they were just running all over the neighborhood. They just took me off guard.”

Victorville Animal Control said Animal Control and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded and captured two of the dogs: a pit bull and a pit bull/mastiff mix. The third pit bull was so aggressive, it could not be captured and was shot by a responding sheriff’s deputy.
