Elbridge grandmother, 70, to be arraigned in shooting of dog she says was attacking cat

A 70-year-old grandmother who touched off a firestorm of controversy when she shot and killed a neighbor’s dog is due to be arraigned later today in Elbridge Town Court.

Susan Leach says the neighbor’s pit bull mix, Tucker, was attacking her cat and she intervened to save her pet’s life. The incident happened around 3 p.m. May 31 on Stevens Road in Elbridge.

After an investigation, Onondaga County sheriff’s deputies handed the case over to state environmental conservation police, who charged Leach with shooting a firearm within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling.

Tucker’s owner, Shannon Sobus, said she was in the yard with her 10-month-old son, 5-year-old daughter and two dogs. She went inside for a moment to get ready to nurse her son.

She heard gunshots. Rushing outside, Sobus saw Tucker bleeding in the middle of the street.
