Pit bull dog bite incidents in Hamilton County on the rise

The number of pit bull attacks reported so far this year in Hamilton County is on pace to top the total reported in 2013, according to a WCPO analysis.

Hamilton County Health Department data show 38 bite incidents involving pit bulls or pit bull mix breeds as of May 11, 2014. The data show 74 total pit bull bite incidents reported in 2013.

In one of the most recent incidents, three pit bulls mauled a 6-year-old girl in Westwood, which has re-focused attention on how the dogs are regulated in the Cincinnati area.

At least 15 percent of the county’s dog bite reports between January 2013 and May 11, 2014 involved pit bulls or pit bull mixes. Not all reports indicated breed. However, in those where breeds were given,18 percent involved pit bulls or pit bull mixes.
