Union County deputies said they were called to a Jonesville neighborhood on Monday after a dog on the loose attacked an elderly woman and her Chihuahua, killing the small dog.
Deputies said the 75-year-old victim was in her yard on West Springs Highway with her dog, which was on a leash, when a boxer-pit bull-mix ran into her yard and attacked them.
When officers arrived, they found the dog clutching the smaller dog and the injured woman, according to the sheriff’s office report.
The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and animal control officers came to get the dogs, deputies said. The report stated they were unable to find the Chihuahua and when they went to the neighboring home where the larger dog came from, they were unable to find any food or water for it.
Deputies said they called the dog’s owner to notify him of the attack and that they were taking the dog into custody.
No other details about the attack or woman’s condition have been released.
