A Manatee County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a pit bull after receiving complaints that it was harassing people in an east Bradenton neighborhood.

Two deputies responded to the area of 5800 12th Street East around 10 a.m. Friday after getting “complaints of an aggressive pit bull,” according to a media release.

The dog was found in a front yard and initially began to approach one of the deputies “in an aggressive manner” before changing course and moving toward several people outside their residence, the release states.

“After backing the residents into a corner of their side yard, the dog continued its aggressive behavior,” the release continues. “Fearing the animal was about to attack,” one of the deputies fired one round from his handgun, striking the dog in the torso, the release states.

The dog died shortly after, and Animal Services was called to remove it.

The owner of the dog is unknown, authorities said.
