A FOUR-MONTH-OLD pup was mauled to death at Bayview’s Rowland Reserve on Saturday by what was believed to be a bull terrier.

Onlookers were left horrified when the terrier ran up behind the young chihuahua, named Teddy, and latched its teeth on to the smaller dog’s head.

The incident occurred in an off-leash area but the vulnerable puppy was standing between the legs of owner Paul Smith at the time.

A couple believed to be the owners of the attacking dog eventually broke the grip it had on the chihuahua before one of them took Mr Smith and Teddy to a veterinary clinic where attempts failed to save Teddy’s life.

Mrs Smith’s wife, Alex, said she was “shocked” at what had happened to her beloved dog.

“We believe owners should be more responsible if they know that their dog could be dangerous,” she said.
