A 19-month-old boy, traveling with a group of transients, was mauled by a pit bull dog in Commerce City on Sunday night, police said.
The toddler was rushed to Children’s Hospital Colorado with serious injuries.
“The child went to give the dog a hug, and it latched onto his face,” said Commerce City police spokesman Chris Dickey.
The dog escaped but was soon captured and taken to the Adams County animal shelter, Dickey said. Charges are pending against the owner, he said.
The dozen people in the group apparently were homeless and traveling together in motor homes, Dickey said. They were camping in the parking lot of the King Soopers at U.S. 85 and East 62nd Avenue.
The child and the dog were among the group when the attack happened at about 7:30 p.m.
