Rochester man who defended girlfriend from dogs will not face charges

A man who used a knife to protect his pregnant girlfriend from a dog attack will not face charges.

Alan Bryant of Robin Court, Five Bells Lane, Rochester, attended Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where charges of possessing a bladed article in a public place were officially dropped.

The 39 year old had been arrested after fending off “pitbull type dogs” that attacked his girlfriend Sonya Freeman in the stairwell of flats where they live on May 15.

But prosecutors ruled his possession of the knife had not been in a public place.

Outside court he said he was relieved, but remained determined to fight for full justice following the attack.

“I’m elated and happy,” he said. “We’ve finally got a bit of justice – it’s not full, but a bit is better than nothing.”

The couple confirmed they had recently been asked for medical records relating to the dog-bite injuries, and hoped the investigation into the attack would continue.

Miss Freeman, who is expecting her first child next month, added: “People look at us because he got arrested, but we haven’t done anything. I’m the victim and they put it on him. Now he’s free of all of this I can take it further with the dog bite.”
