A 3-year-old girl was attacked by dog Wednesday evening in the community of Bridlewood in southwest Calgary.
She needed three stitches to her upper lip, had a puncture wound under her eye, and scratches on her face.
About 7 p.m. the girl was bitten by a Bull Mastiff. The little girl had been in the yard playing with the dog which belonged to a family friend.
Alvin Murray from Animal & Bylaw Services says “she went outside with the dog. A few minutes later, the family heard a bark and the child crying.”
The girl was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The dog was seized and Animal Bylaw Services plans to lay charges against the dog’s owner.
According to the City of Calgary news release, a mandatory court appearance is required in all serious aggressive dog incidents. Fines can be as high as $10,000.
So far this year, there have been 218 dog bites in Calgary, 32 more than the same time last year.
