This is in response to the editorial “Don’t ban pit bulls: Punish owners” (July 14). The title itself is misguided and defies national statistics. In the nine-year period from 2005 to 2013, pit bulls killed 176 Americans and accounted for 62 percent of the total recorded deaths (283).
Combined, pit bulls and Rottweilers accounted for 74 percent of these deaths.
Punishing irresponsible dog owners after the fact does nothing to solve the carnage.
The editorial loses all credibility with the statement that the unprovoked attack on Zainabou Drame, that cost her her tongue, “could” scar her for life physically and emotionally. Are you folks for real?
