Pit bull charges responding officers

Animal control officers are reminding pet owners to keep their animals on a leash after a recent incident in which a large pit bull was running loose and aggressively charging people.

Animal control officers responded to report in the 100 block of 17th Avenue on Sunday of an aggressive dog charging people in the neighborhood, Columbus Police officials said.

The large, black pit bull charged arriving officers multiple times during the incident, resulting in a standoff. The dog was eventually captured and secured, police said, and the pet owner was located and cited for the incident.

Animal control officials said there is a leash law in the city and if an at-large animal causes breakage of the skin of a human or domestic animal a 10-day quarantine is mandated by state law.

To report a stray animal, contact Columbus Animal Control at 402-564-8839 or the police department at 402-564-3201.
