A Lehigh Acres family is recovering Monday after an early morning scare. They say two stray pit bulls stalked their home and attacked their pet dog.
For Lehigh Acres father of two, Tom Valasquez – his German Shepherd Drago – can now be considered more than just his best friend.
“He took care of us and I mean a good loyal noble dog,” said Valasquez.
He is considered a hero – with the battle wounds to prove it – after he put his life on the line when things got hairy early Monday morning.
“I open my garage door – two large pit bulls came through my garage – and I had to push one out of the way but the second one jumped on my dog,” explained Valasquez.
Valasquez says while Drago engaged one pit bull in his garage – the other made its way into his laundry room rather than getting caught in the crossfire of exposed teeth – and he immediately called 911.
“My hands were shaking, I couldn’t even make the call,” said Valasquez.
While he waited for deputies and Lee County Domestic Animal Services to arrive- Valasquez could only wonder what would have happened had it been his wife or young children who had been outside instead.
“Here these two dogs are loose I don’t know if they are aggressive towards humans or not, they’re aggressive towards my dog I’m not going to wait and test on that,” Valasquez said.
Valasquez says after nearly an hour DAS arrived on scene.
We learned the owners of the pit bulls were cited for the attack on Drago and for being out on the loose.
No other charges have been filed.
“I just don’t want to deal with this no more – you know keep your dog inside,” said Valasquez.
Valasquez fears the dogs could be back again soon. He’ll consider putting up a fence, but hopes the pit bulls’ owners take this close call to heart.
