One Americus woman was airlifted to a Topeka hospital and a second hospitalized in Emporia after they were bitten by a dog Monday.
Sheriff Jeff Cope says rescue workers were called to 1107 Fourth, initially for a medical call shortly after 3 pm. They found that medical issue had led to another incident.
Lyon County deputies and Americus Police arrived in short order. Cope says 35-year-old Cheryle Hardy of the residence suffered the seizure and was bitten first by the pit bull, with 51-year-old Lisa Gardner bitten second. Gardner was airlifted to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, while Hardy was taken by ground ambulance to Newman Regional Health. Stormont-Vail has not released Gardner’s condition, while Newman Regional Health does not release patient conditions as a matter of policy.
Cope says there are no reports the dog has had a history of bites. The dog will be quarantined at a veterinary office for 10 days before either the family or the court system decides its fate.
