Dog could return to neighborhood after attacking couple |

A short walk down the street turned to terror for one Kirtland family on Thursday.

“I was terrified. My son is traumatized.”

Holly Sletta and her 6-year-old son were out for a walk in their neighborhood when she was bitten by a dog. She put her son on her shoulders to protect him from the dog.

“It didn’t growl it didn’t bark, it just came at us,” she said, “The dog just kept biting and biting until my husband got out there.”

She was bitten on the leg and her husband was bitten on the arm and chin. And now she says the dog may be coming back to the neighborhood.

“I can’t even sleep, it drives me nuts. This is where my son lives, he plays in the yard and if he was to get out and get in the yard and I wasn’t outside to protect him this time, I don’t know what would happen.”

San Juan County Sheriff’s Office says that this case is still under review, but if the dog is deemed not vicious, the dog will be returned to its owners, but Holly says she doesn’t want that dog back in her neighborhood.

“I feel safer now that the dog is gone, but it is coming back and I feel like there is nothing I can do about it.”

And now she no longer feels safe outside.

“I’m not going to be taking any more evening strolls.”

Sletta’s son was not hurt in the attack.

The dog is being evaluated based its history and the severity of the attack to determine if it is considered vicious. The owner could also be facing charges based on the outcome of the investigation.
