Barrow woman pleads guilty after two injured by dog

Leanne Jane Marie Axford, 36, of Egerton Court, Barrow Island, appeared before Furness Magistrates’ Court yesterday and admitted having two dogs dangerously out of control in a public place. The incident related to a street attack that landed a bike repair shop owner in A&E after he tried to pull the two Staffies off another dog.

Adrian Hughes, who runs Cycle 100 in Ramsden Street, described the attack as so ferocious it would have killed a child.

Mrs Lisa Hine, prosecuting, said that at the moment they were having difficulty tracing the bitch Rosie and needed the RSPCA’s help in tracking her down. She was the animal that bit Mr Hughes and Mark Newby.

She told the court she believed she was currently being fostered and asked for the case to be adjourned for two weeks.

Mrs Hine explained that this was to give defence solicitor Mr Michael Graham time to bring in an animal behaviour expert to assess Rosie before she was ordered to be put to sleep. The other animal involved, called Alfie was currently in the Barrow Borough Council kennels.

Mr Hughes explained earlier this year how he had been in his shop.

He saw Axford standing outside with two Staffies. She just had her foot on the leads.

Mr Hughes said they spotted a man walking a collie and broke free and attacked the animal savagely.

Mr Hughes explained how as he tried to separate the animals one of the Staffies attacked him. He had to be bandaged up and have a tetanus injection at A&E.

Police initially said no crime had been committed but after viewing CCTV footage on the Evening Mail’s website, charges were brought against Axford.
