Newark Police were called to the James Hall Trail on Monday after a woman reported that an unleashed pit bull attacked her dog.
According to NPD spokesman Master Cpl. Gerald Bryda, the incident happened at approximately 5:20 p.m. when the woman was with her golden retriever on the trail.
She told police she came across two black men between the ages of 18 and 22 years old with the pit bull. She said one was heavy set and the other was thin but both were between 6 feet and 6 feet, 2 inches tall and they were accompanied by a black woman between 15 and 19 years old.
Bryda said the approximately 30 pound, brown pit bull broke free from its leash at the entrance to the trail near Apple Road and attacked the woman’s dog. She called police, but the owners had left the area by the time officers arrived.
Bryda said the golden retriever did not sustain any injuries, and the case has since been turned over to NPD’s animal control officer.
