2 dogs dead after ‘horrifying’ off-leash attack in Fredericton – New Brunswick – CBC News

A Fredericton woman is still shaken after she says a Rottweiler attacked her miniature poodle on Thursday, leading to both dogs being euthanized.

Sheila LeBlanc says the Rottweiler and another dog were off leash when they attacked and the incident should never have happened.

She says eight-year-old Buddy tried to escape, but he was no match for the two bigger dogs.

“It was horrifying, it really was. Snarls and bites and just, Buddy was helpless,” LeBlanc says.

According to LeBlanc, the dogs’ owner wasn’t around at the time of the attack.

After it all happened, LeBlanc was faced with a difficult decision.

“I couldn’t let him suffer, couldn’t do it, so I made the decision to euthanize him,” she said tearing up.

A neighbour says the attack was gruesome.

“There were two pools of blood, right here and here and here,” said Heather Watt.

She used bleach to clean the blood left on the pavement after the attack.

“I’ve never seen in four years an altercation like this. Everybody gets along, dogs and people. I don’t feel it had to happen,” she said.

Attack not the first case in capital city

The city of Fredericton fined the owner of the Rottweiler $50.

It’s not the first attack in the capital city. In May, three Rottweilers killed another small dog in front of a teenaged girl.

But LeBlanc says this isn’t about the breed, it’s about owners taking care of their pets.

“Really in the end I guess the only thing I can do is spread the word that dog owners need to be responsible for their animals,” she said.

CBC was unable to reach the Rottweiler’s owner for comment.
