A local family is dealing with loss after the family dog was killed in its own fenced-in backyard.
Nela was found dead Wednesday morning.
A witness said two dogs running loose first started barking back and forth with 13-year-old Nela.
The dogs climbed over the fence and mauled Nela to death, the witness told Animal Services.
The dogs were returned to their owner because they don’t meet the state’s legal definition of dangerous.
Nela’s owners were upset nothing was done to the alleged attack dogs.
“It hurts my heart that they justify that animals can be killed, in a way,” said Ashley Galan, Nela’s owner.
Animal Services did cite the owner for letting her dogs run loose and for what happened to Nela.
The owner called WESH 2 News late Friday afternoon and said she questions the police report. She admitted her dogs were running loose, but said they’ve never been aggressive.
