Leiston: Cat owners call for action on killer dog – News – East Anglian Daily Times

David and Maria Crawford were left devastated by the death of their 16-year-old cat, Sassy, and disappointed by the alleged failure of the authorities to punish the culprit.

Mr Crawford described how the dog took Sassy in its mouth while she was sleeping in his front garden in Leiston and shook her close to death. “I turned around and I could not believe my eyes, it had my cat in its mouth,” he said.

“It had taken my cat when she was asleep half way up the garden.”

Sassy died soon after from a suspected heart attack brought on by the traumatic incident.

Mr Crawford reported the attack to Suffolk Constabulary on Saturday evening, which said it passed the matter to Suffolk Coastal District Council’s (SCDC) dog warden. Ms Crawford, who is Mr Crawford’s ex-wife, believed the only action taken was a letter written by a dog warden to the dog’s owner, which she felt failed to go far enough.

“People would not allow it if a dog was killed by a wolf, so why should a dog be able to kill a cat?” she said. “I feel that cats have got no protection –- no-one seems to care – but what if it gets out and bites a child, would it be different then?”

A spokesman for SCDC said it was a police matter.

Sassy had been with the family since she was a kitten and, despite getting on in years, was said to have had plenty of life left in her.

“She was chasing me around the living room just the other day,” Ms Crawford said. “It is so upsetting to know that a little old cat had been hauled out of a bush and chucked about in a dog’s mouth – it’s not a nice way for her to die.”

The distraught pet owner has called for more to be done to punish the owners of killer dogs. “It’s becoming far too common,” she said.

Last week, Ipswich mother-of-two Marion Bennett said her family were left “brokenhearted” after their pet cat was mauled to death in a dog attack.
