The owner of two Pit Bulls is facing charges after the dogs reportedly attacked two other dogs and a resident on Thursday morning in Bridgeport.
According to Bridgeport Police, around 12 a.m. Thursday, the two Pit Bulls were running loose in the Whitley Street area of Bridgeport when they attacked two Shih Tzus on a resident’s porch. When the owner of the Shih Tzus attempted to stop the attack, police say the Pit Bulls then attacked the resident, causing lacerations to his hand.
Two officers were dispatched, one to the Pit Bull owner’s home and one to the Shih Tzus’ owner’s home. Police say when the officer arrived at the Pit Bull owner’s home, one of the dogs ran toward him, and despite vocal commands to stop, the dog continued to charge. The officer then shot and killed the dog. The Belmont County Animal Shelter arrived on the scene, upon which the remaining Pit Bull’s owner signed over control of the dog to the shelter.
One of the Shih Tzus had to be euthanized due to injuries suffered in the attack. The remaining Shih Tzu was transported to a Pittsburgh animal hospital with serious injuries.
The owner of the Pit Bull has been charged with negligent assault and failure to leash. More charges may be filed.
