A 59-year-old man mauled during a pit bull attack in southwest Modesto has died from his injuries, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
The man’s 77-year-old mother, who was also injured in the attack, remains in critical condition at Doctors Medical Center.
Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson said Wednesday morning that investigators are still working to learn who owns the four pit bulls that were involved in the mauling.
At 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, deputies received 911 calls about a dog attack in the 800 block of Glenn Avenue.
When deputies arrived at the home, they found three pit bulls attacking the man in his backyard, with a fourth pit bull circling the mauling, Christianson said.
That’s when deputies shot and killed the first two dogs. The other two pit bulls ran to a nearby yard, apparently spooked by the gunfire.
Investigators then secured the backyard where the attack took place and entered the house, where they found the elderly woman who also had been mauled, Christianson said.
The Sheriff’s Department is not releasing the names of the victims.
